A VISIT TO THE COMMISSARY: THE FOOD SUPPLY FOR THE ARMY
|
THE COMMISSARY AT HISTORIC FORT
STEUBEN PORTRAYS THE MANY KINDS OF
EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES USED FOR FOOD
STORAGE AND PREPARATION ON THE OHIO
FRONTIER IN THE LATE 18TH CENTURY. SINCE
RESOURCES WERE LIMITED AND THE
GOVERNMENT HAD LITTLE MONEY TO KEEP
THE MEN SUPPLIED WITH FOOD, HUNTERS
WERE RELIED UPON TO BRING IN GAME. AT
ONE POINT, CAPTAIN HAMTRAMCK WROTE TO
PROVISIONER DANIEL BRITT, "...the surveyors
of the 4th and 5th range are ready to go to work
and I have no provision on hand to furnish them
with guards...the 28th we were without bread or
meat and the 29th again without bread."
