Calling Young Historians!

Applications for the 2023 Hands-On-History at Historic Fort Steuben are now being accepted.

This annual Summer Youth Educational Program for 4th to 6th graders allows the students to participate in activities that present life in the early Ohio Valley.

“This is an opportunity for youngsters to learn more about our history through crafts, games, videos, and presentations by experts,” explained Judy Bratten, Director of Historic Fort Steuben. “We have several students who love to come every year and many of them come back to volunteer!”

Among the topics covered are the history and crafts of Native Americans, the surveying and settlement of the Northwest Territory, the military experiences at the Fort, the Lewis and Clark expedition and the work of archaeologists. They will measure, dig, make crafts and learn about creatures in the Ohio River as well as march with Baron von Steuben.

The program runs from 10am to 2:30pm each day from July 10-14. The cost for the one-week session is $55 and applications are available at the Visitor Center or on the website, www.oldfortsteuben.com. For more information, call 740-283-1787. Historic Fort Steuben is located at 120 S. 3rd Street in Steubenville.
